Why Not?

Psalm 37:3-5 (NLT) Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you our heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you.

Since becoming a stay-at-home Mom to two toddlers I have become very aware of just how much I like to control things and how little patience I have. The more chaotic my life gets the more I instinctively try to control things. I find myself constantly wondering why things feel like they are spinning out of control the more I try to fix it. My constant need to control becomes unhealthy for everyone. Then, one day, I came to ask myself “Why not?’

When my daughter wants to eat lunch on the floor like a picnic—Why not?

If they want to take a bath on a night that isn’t a bath night—Why not?

When we have plenty of time, and they need something to do—Why not?

With no good reason to say ‘No’ I’ve opened the door for amazing moments and blessings that would have never happened. If I had kept to my plan and clung tightly to the control I had over our schedule I would have missed so many good things.

In recent weeks, a conversation with my husband made me think this could also help my mindset when I try controlling things that should be handed over to God. In this high stress world, with so many things changing and burdening our souls, I want to always remember that God is in control. He is not surprised by any of it and His plan will always bless us more than the one we are trying to force to happen. So when you feel like you are losing your patience and trying to control everything around you to no avail, think to yourself…

Why not open your hands and give it to your Heavenly Father?

Why not allow God to lead you where He wants you so that He can bless you more than you can imagine?

Why not lean into God’s faithful wisdom and discernment?

Because God is offering us peace, truth and hope; all that you need and more—there is no good reason to say ‘No’. So why are you?
